Savio Nsereko
I was looking at something online just now which reminded me of this fella. Not even talking about West Ham only but has any player been signed by anyone for 9m and made so little impact for the rest of his career thereafter. His career path after he left us was underwhelming to say the least!
Pretty sure I was at his home debut but who on earth scouted him:

Not a chance we paid £9m for him.

Well up there with the shittest signings ever. Definitely a huge stink of fish about that deal.

"That's Champions League" or was that another player the grinning chimp was on about?

Selling Bellemy and replacing him with this bloke has got to be the worst transfer business we've ever done.

It's something like Alex V would champion.

Re: Savio Nsereko
We paid £1.5m for him.

Would have been a total of nine with add-ons (such as him helping us into the Champions League, curing cancer and colonising Mars).

We sold an in-form Bellamy to raise cash (Bellamy himself didn't want to leave and had no idea he was being touted) and then "replaced" him amid club-generated PR that we'd spent all the money we received and he was the Next Big Thing.

As I remember he created a goal on his first or second sub appearance and then was utterly useless.

I was in the US the time we sold Bellamy.

I think it was Teen Wolf (taps nose) on here that messaged a few and broke the news early he was leaving. Pissed me right off, that did.

Re: Savio Nsereko
I hated Bellamy and was glad to see the back of him. He was a good player and did some decent things but 95% of his game seemed to be about taking 40 yard shots in the hope of adding to his highlight reel, and then moaning at the rest of the team because it was his fault that he’d missed.

Seems like a good fella off the pitch though.

trundle, wasn't Teen Wolf one of the P family?

Re: Savio Nsereko
I always thought that Duxbury's real project at the time was pretending that the club wasn't completely boracic so that we wouldn't get vultures buying our players for peanuts, and that we'd still sell season tickets, etc. Making out that we spent £9m on Savio was part of that.

Regarding big money players whose career goes nowhere, what about David Bentley? Spurs pay £15m for him and he barely plays after his 1st season with them, eventually retiring at 29, although his career was pretty much over at 25. He didn't have any bad injury problems either I think (apart from the 6 months out soon after he joined us on loan).

Baffles me how we didn't destroy the Championship with the squad we had that year. Masochistically loved the playoffs, as is the nature of every West Ham fan, but naively couldn't believe we made it so hard for ourselves.

I think it was mainly down to us getting 7 draws in 9 games in Feb/March. Thanks to Fat "Respect the point" Sam.

Re: Savio Nsereko
I read/heard that Bentley had so much money in the bin that he wasn't that bothered about playing and preferred to just play golf. It is another good example though of a player who without seemingly any real injury problems just seemed to vanish.

Even paying 1.5mill would have been too much.

Remember getting a text whilst skiing from a Whoer who stated we had signed Saviola.

Slightly wide of the mark.
